Onco Nursing
Oncology nurses play an important role in supporting the patient throughout the cancer
journey.
Oncology nurses work in a multidisciplinary team, in a variety of settings and play a
fundamental role in cancer care, with the potential to influence and improve the quality of
the cancer care system at every level. They are the caretakers behind the scenes,
communicating with our doctors, coordinating patient care, reassuring patients to regain
control in face of the illness, and to cope with vulnerability and uncertainty. Also, they
are an important channel of communication between our doctors and the patient's family
and/or caregivers.

For a specialised cancer care centre, it is important that all forces touching the patient
and his/her family are a point of good information exchange. Hence the Cytecare nursing
staff often serves as the first level of communication and helps coordinate the many aspects
of treatment, throughout the patient's journey, from screening to diagnosis, to treatment
and post treatment. Our skilled staff has been trained in line with the best known cancer
care protocols and act as the catalyst between the clinician and the patient.
They often end up being an extended family for the patient, thereby, providing compassion,
hope and motivation to them during difficult situations. They may perform a number of
duties, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Reviewing your health history.
- Assessing and monitoring your physical and emotional status.
- Keeping track of your laboratory, pathology and imaging studies.
- Safely administering medications, fluids and cancer treatments (e.g., chemotherapy).
- Collaborating with your doctors and other clinicians about the treatment plan.
- Helping you understand the disease, your treatment plan and possible side effects.
- Helping translate complex medical terminology and answer questions.
- Communicating with the doctors on your behalf.
- Helping you plan for and manage symptoms throughout treatment.
